Smokin’ Turkey!

Spent the past weekend cooking. Did a great job with a beef stew on Sunday-I can cook if I must say so myself. Followed that up yesterday with some time at the smoker. Fired it up, tossed on some mesquite wood, and man, those three turkey legs and chunk of turkey breast turned out ummm ummmm good!

I just watched Julie/Julia (or was it the other way around?). As many of you may know, it involved a young lady in New York beginning a blog about her efforts to cook all of the recipes in Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” and posting the results on a daily basis. I was intrigued by the committment to blog – of course I have not been so committed, but do wish I had been. I’ll try harder from this point forward. It would be nice to find new friends, or at least to know that some took some degree of pleasure from reading what I take the time to write or post. (And this movie was one of the better ones I’ve watched – Meryl Streep, as always, put forth a tremendous performance! I trust you agree!

Another holiday come and nearly gone. Once again, too much hustle and bustle, too many Christmas/holiday movies, and way too much of crowds, both of people and parking lots. I can’t wait until 2010 gets here, especially January 2nd! Having said that, there were a few positives…I made my way around to visit those who work for me, personally giving holiday bonus checks to all and getting together for the annual Christmas party where we all break bread together before returning to the respective work places to finish out the year. I’d like to think that those who participate enjoy doing so. I do. But I still can’t wait until 2010, January 2nd, especially!

I feel good!

I did something totally unlike me earlier today. While sitting at a local restaurant eating breakfast, by myself, I noticed an elderly couple that appeared to be in their 80′s or so sitting across from me. They were eating their breakfast quietly, but occasionally the man would reach across the table and briefly touch the hand of the woman. (I’m assuming they were husband and wife) I thought it was a good thing that as old as they appeared to be, they also appeared to have great affection for each other. I liked seeing that – sometimes there’s so little of it in the world.

As I got up to leave after paying my bill, I was actually already outside the door when I turned around and went back in, asking for my server. When she came over I asked her to let me pay the bill for the elderly couple, but not to say anything to them. I gave her a $20, and turned around to again leave the restaurant. And I felt good. It was going to be, and was, a good day! I hope you had a good day too!

A bit chilly after the first freeze of the year, but otherwise sunny and bright. Weather like this is expected this time of year and reminds me of where I grew up. Where the winters were bone-chillingly cold, the snow was deep, and yes, from time to time, breathtakingly beautiful. Just like today is going to be.

Of course I like to waltz!

One of the most sensuous dances there is – the waltz. I don’t care if it’s the Viennese waltz or the country waltz – it’s just great to watch! Even better to do, with the right person!
